From here, the valley gives you two ways forward.
One route is longer and climbs out of sight behind the hill. The Observer will lose you there. There is no puzzle on that route. The route itself is the price. If you take it, you may change your hat colour and take 700 points from the Hunters.
The other route is much shorter, but more exposed. It contains a code puzzle. If you solve it, you can take 300 points from the Hunters, but you save distance.

They may have taken the long hidden path, or the shorter path, where they must solve a puzzle before continuing.
You know the Fugitive. Think about how they make decisions and which route they are likely to choose. The Observer may also have seen something useful.
Choose carefully.
If you follow the wrong path, you lose your chance to recover the points stolen by the Fugitive.
